About the Hamner Theater
The Hamner Theater, a center for the performing arts in central Virginia, has been home to a varied range of drama, comedy, dance and music since 2005. The Hamner aims to involve the community in every aspect of performance, and offers training programs in all aspects of theater production, including acting, playwriting, lighting, sound & set design, stage managing & directing. Our program, the Virginia Playwrights and Screenwriters Initiative (VPSI), is dedicated to the production of new work, part of our continuing mission to foster new works for the stage. We also offer an ongoing program of Improv with the Hamner Improv Troupe, HIT. Improv classes and VPSI staged readings are always free. We offer:
- Season of 3 to 5 plays, featuring original plays, as well as classics
- Monthly series of music, drama or dance performances
- Staged Readings of new work
- Improv classes
- Playwriting & screenwriting workshops
- Annual Community Shakespeare productions
- Family show presented each Christmas
The Hamner Theater receives funding from the Virginia Commission for the Arts and anonymous donors to support its mission of bringing professional theater to central Virginia.
